First Christian Church…Our History The First Christian Church of Washington first met on January 23, 1955 in an old hotel building at 104 Lafayette. There were 29 people in attendance including 3 families form Washington and several people from other communities who attended to encourage the small group. It began with the desire of a few local families to have an independent Christian Church in the Washington community. In the late summer of 1955, the church moved to a storefront at 114 Lafayette, now Lafayette Park. In 1959, a frame school house at 3rd and Burnside was placed for sale. The church, making the only offer, bought the building for $1010 ad renovated it for a house of worship. In March of 1973 a church building was constructed on the property on highway 47. At that time there were 75-80 people attending. As the church grew and new faces abounded remodeling of this facility and addition of the north wing was completed in 1987. In 2004, “a Bigger Home for a Growing Family” campaign begun and the vision was set for what you see today. In March of 2007 we held our first worship service at our new site on HWY 100. Since that service we have been blessed beyond our vision and have grown by 40%. We believe we have only begun to see what God has planned. Though the history of a church is often framed in with locations, dates, and buildings, the real story is about people. The church nurtured and challenged by faithful ministers, elders, deacons, teachers, and workers continued to grow in love, faith, purpose, and numbers. Seeds were planted in people and we are still reaping the harvest. We are building for the future on the foundation of faith they laid.
